A nice evening took me to Hucknall Rolls Leisure for the first time this week, as I am returning to watch their First team host Awsworth Villa on Friday Night with a 7.30pm kick off(there will be a programme).

 

On arrival on Wednesday Evening, I was met by a friendly face by the chap who runs the tea bar near the players dressing rooms and was soon joined by the Rolls Sec and the Kirton Sec Tony. we had a good chat before strolling over to pitchside.

 

Rolls were first out the starting blocks and had a few chances go wide, whilst their high flying visitors had a few chances blocked and well saved.

 

On 31 minutes, Rolls pressed forward and GARETH HAYES finished off the move to put his side in front. This seemed to stun Kirton in to action and after 40 minutes they were level when ADAM BODDY hit a 35 yard looping shot over the keepers had in to the net.

 

Half time came and went and Kirton came out looking a bit sharper and looking more likely to go in front, but on 61 minutes, it was GARETH HAYES who thumped home his and his clubs second goal of the game to give Rolls a 2-1 lead.

 

Kirton threw everything forward and it came as no surprise when JAMIE CHARLTON's shot found the back of the net. Both sides then had plenty of chances in this entertaining match to win the game, but a share of the points was the fair result on the night.

First ever programme £1

When high flying Second Division Moorgreen FC announcing that they were producing their First ever programme for their 1/4 final cup tie v Senior Division League Leaders Hucknall Rolls Leisure a while ago, there was only one place I was going to attend. Over the past week I had taken orders via the internet and with Clubman Keiran not being able to be at the tie, I said I would sell the programme for them. On arrival at the ground, I had orders for 26 programmes. The programme was a very good effort and all that bought one was impressed.

 

It was good to meet up with old and new faces including Simon Matters, Derek Coope, Peter Chappell, Alan Savage amongst many more and Bill & Denise who bought their advanced NSL Groundhop Tickets.

 

Before kick off, I took the Moorgreen FC team photo and then stood with ex Eastwood Town Manager Paul MacFarland(who was only in charge for 3 games until the sad events at the club which he was left in the dark of a lot of the points).

 

I then joined Simon Matters as the game kicked off and it was a fairly even 20 minutes with the homesters cutting out the better of the early exchances, simon then popped and got us a cuppa, as he returned on 42 minutes, ref Andy Rolfe awarded a free kick to the home side that landed to the feet of WILL GORDON who slotted home the rebound.

 

Half time came and I was joined by Ashland Rovers Manager Jez Wright and one of his players, Jez kindly donated to the Blogs Charity before he left. During the half time break, Moorgreen stayed on the pitch whilst Rolls went to the changing rooms where they must have got a earful, as they came out for the second half much more fired up for the game.

 

On 55 minutes, Moorgreen should have increased their lead when Bowler fired wide, this seemed to fire Rolls up, as they pressed forward and ANDY START tucked home the equaliser on 57 minutes.

 

The tie was now neatly balanced and Rolls had their tails up now and looked a bit quicker to the ball and on 63 minutes ANDY START was in the right position again to put his side on front.

 

Moorgreen then took the game to their visitors and must have thought they were level when a attacker headed just wide.

 

Both sides played some good football during the game but it was Rolls who went through to the Semi Finals of the League Cup.

With Bingham Town in 3rd place with games in hand on the top two in the division, they really needed the three points against a very well organised Underwood Villa. On arrival at the Butt Lane Ground, I was greeted by a few of the officials from both clubs before getting a cuppa in the nice clubhouse.

 

With local rivals West Bridgford FC's match being called off, a few of their management had arrived to watch this afternoons proceedings and a chat with them as they play host to Bingham Town in the final match of this seasons Notts Senior League Groundhop event on Saturday 12t April with a 6.30pm kick off.

 

A quick chat with old friend Neil Loughlin from Belper and then I was joined at pitchside by Heanor Town's Tony Squires and the Cotgrave FC manager.

 

The game kicked off with Bingham having the wind behind their backs and took the game to the visitors and had a few chances to take a early lead, but Villa came back in to the match with more confidence and had several chances of their own in a evenly balanced game.

 

After 28 minutes, the homesters were awarded a free kick and from 20 yards out, up stepped TOM SPENCER to curl the ball over the Underwood wall and in to the net to give Town the lead.

 

Half time came and went and Underwood now had the wind behind them and forged forward but with difficult conditions, wayward shooting could not pull them level, though at this stage of the game, they looked the better of the two sides.

 

On 70 minutes, Underwood got their deserved equaliser when a corner from the left side came in and fell at the feet of DANE WAKEFIELD who bungled the ball home to the delight of his fellow players.

 

This seemed to prompt Bingham in to action and they had a chance that just sailed over the crossbar before in the 75th minute, TOM SPENCER sprinted through the two centre halfs and placed his shot under the advancing goal keeper to give his side a 2-1 lead.

 

With ten minutes to go, Villa thought they had claimed a draw when they had the ball in the net, but it was adjudged to be offside.

After missing out on my dose of footie on Saturday, I was hopeful there would be a midweek match on and more than hopeful as it had not rained for 2 days and we had strong winds blowing across the area.

I rang good friend Daz Wragg who kindly offered me a lift to Blidworth if it was on and after confirmation from the club on the afternoon, plans were made.

Daz picked me up and we headed for Blidworth where on arrival at the car park, it was full, gee was this to be a record attendance here, last time I saw the car park this full was when I staged the Groundhop fixture between them and Parkhouse FC some years ago of front of a crowd of over 300.

As we entered the ground, we were the only fans that had turned up and found out there would be no record attendance tonight, the keep fit was on in the Welfare Club, looks like they got a bigger gate than the footie tonight!

I was greeted on the gate by NorthNottsRam who had saved me a programme, though not read it yet, it does seem to have a lot more pages in it than my last visit.

I said a few hello';s to folk from both clubs before the crowd began to arrive, firstly came along Pete Watmough closely followed by Richard Lane. 

The match kicked off and Blidworth had a bit of control in the early exchanges but didnt muster a shot in this time to trouble the Normo keeper, though the away side on their first attack after 7 minutes did and took the lead when a cross from the left wing found SAMUEL GRIFFITHS unmarked in the penalty area to slot home.

Blidworth tried to battle back but looked second to the ball at some stages but did create a couple of chances, one which flashed just over the bar and a couple that went straight to Whitto the visiting keeper.

Normanton kept going forward and it was no surprise when they scored again after 34 minutes, when a shot from the edge of the area stuck a home defender and wrong footed the home keeper, so the OWN GOAL put the visitors 2-0 up.

By now I had gone and stood with old friend Mark Thorpe and his youngest son for a chat before getting a tin of orange at half time, during the break I had a chat with Dave Scott, Southwell City's manager who was at the game.

The Second Half I ventured back down to pitchside and joined Richard Lane and Pete Watmough for a chat, the second half action wasnt good, possibly due to both sides making subs and the game lost its flow. Though in the 80th minute, Blidworth nearly got a goal back, when Whitto hit a poor kick out straight to a Blidworth forward who shot stright in to the keepers arms. Blidworth did have a couple of other chances, one that whistled closely past the post, whilst at the other end the home keeper was called in to action a couple of times.

Bookings for the 2nd Precision Notts Senior League Groundhop have been coming in steady with already over 80 bookings from as far as Sweden and all four corners of the United Kingdom. The coach is nearly full now with just 4 seats remaining and organiser Rob Hornby is fairly confident that this seasons event will be as popular as ever.

Hornby states "that the format is very simple, a Notts Senior League match is played on the evening of Friday 11th April with four league games on Saturday 12th April at four homes of clubs chosen."

This season the chosen matches are:

Friday 11th April 2014: 

Cotgrave FC v Burton Joyce FC (7.45pm)

Saturday 12th April 2014: 

Wollaton FC v Beeston AFC(10.10am)

Ruddington Village FC v Boots Athletic FC(12.50pm)

Keyworth United FC v Sandhurst FC(3.40pm)

West Bridgford FC v Bingham Town FC(6.30pm)

Rob Hornby who has organised 9 Central Midlands League Groundhops in the past and last seasons First ever Notts Senior League Hop is hoping again for big crowds as in the past 10 years.

Hornby says " that the Hops work well as they are cheap and affordable for all, at just £15 for the Advanced Ticket, that gets you admission in to all 5 Grounds and a programme from each game in a pack. We get a lot of people who come along who support Football League clubs but like to support the smaller clubs and in this way of the hop, the advanced ticket helps all ten clubs that take part. Food is available at all 5 grounds all different and all costing £2.50 or under, teas and coffees at 50p a cup, some clubs will have beer on sale as well."

 

Rob added " my wife runs a programme stall for charity with lots of Non League programmes for just 4 for £1, this year the money raised is going to The Oaklands, a place for Adults with Special Needs. There are also other stalls that attended and each club will have their own stall, with home clubs selling their first ever badge at just £3."

 

Hornby is hoping to sell a lot more Advanced Tickets as they are now on sale up till the 3rd April 2014 and hopes to beat the target of 150 Advanced Tickets, so its halfway there at the moment. It is important as Rob stresses that from the Advanced Ticket all ten clubs get a share, as turning up on the day and paying on the gate only the home side take the cash and for it to work, its only fair to reward all ten clubs, Hornby feels that all money is vital to these small clubs also Hornby knows by the sales of advanced tickets how many programmes the clubs will need to produce, as the only way of being guaranteed all 5 programmes is via the Advanced Ticket.

 

This season is also the Notts Senior League's 10th Anniversary, so it would be good to see the attendances of last seasons first NSL Hop beaten, the highest crowd was set at Kimberley MW FC of 379.

The Coach only has 4 seats remaining and costs £15 for a seat to take you round the 4 grounds on the Saturday and leaves Queens Road at the side of Nottingham Railway Station but has to be booked with the Advanced Ticket.

WOODS STORM TO WIN

Having to stay local due to yesterday being Hazel's birthday and her daughter coming down for the weekend, the weather was very poor over Friday Night, so it was a matter of looking what was on. My first choice match was this match at Debdale Park as its only about 400 yards from where I live.

 

On arrival, I notice that they have put a new pay box in on the drive up to the ground, where I buy my programme and also my raffle ticket, to which I win a bottle of wine.

 

I stood with ref Scott Mason as kick off happens as his game over at Clay Cross Town has been called off earlier off in the day. After 12 minutes, Sherwood take the lead through TIM GREGORY as the rain begins, so I go to find shelter under the stand. The rain begins to get heavier and loud claps of thunder and sparks of lightening light up the sky as it goes quite dark. On 21 minutes, a cross from the right wing finds the head of ASHLEY FLEET who doubles the score. I chat away to the good folk from Glapwell FC. Half time came and it was thought the referee had called the game off, so I retired to the clubhouse for a pint, Welbeck then got changed from their red shirts and after a pitch inspection the second half was said to go ahead, so Welbeck came out in Yellow shirts.

 

The visitors then had the better of the chances but couldn't convert any and their heads went down after 51 minutes when ASHLEY FLEEY made it 3-0 to Sherwood. The rain had cleared up but the pitch was a bit of a mudbath with the ball rolling ok. After 62 minutes with his first touch of the ball sub BRENDAN WILLIAMS increased the homesters lead.

 

After 80 minutes, CARL RUSSO made it 5-0 with a tap in, but Welbeck didn't give up and on 88 minutes, a long range free kick stuck the post for BLAKE to tap in the rebound.

NORMANTON LEAVE CALVERTON IN THE DARK

This tie kicked off at 7.30pm, not sure why it was down to kick off 15 minutes earlier than a league game, but perhaps it was down as a cup tie. Calverton have struggled this season, having not won a game in 21 matches in the league so far, whilst visitors South Normanton have been going great guns and sit in 3rd position with games in hand on the two teams above them.

 

On arrival, I was met by a few of the visiting committee and supporters before getting a cuppa with Sean Richardson and Malc Gretton before going in to the ground and having a chat with Richard Lane, Derek, Michael and a chap who's name I can never remember who watches Arnold Town. I also have a chat with old friend and new South Normanton Sec Steve Harris.

 

The game kicked off and I then chat to Scott Ward who offers me a lift home after the game and also Heanor Town's Tony Squires who asks me if there is a Notts Senior League Groundhop, as he's not seen it advertised anywhere!

 

I walk round toward the halfway line and don't have to wait long for the first goal to go in, when after only 7 minutes LEWIS fires the visitors in front. It then began to rain heavy, so it was all take cover under the stand behind the goal and whilst we expected Calverton to begin to leak goals, they stayed stable, though not threatening in attack, so at half time the visitors were 1 in front.

 

The Second Half saw Normo straight on the attack and they doubled their lead after 47 minutes when LEIGHTON added to their total. After 50 minutes the home side had their first real effort on target but Whittingham in the visiting goal was in the way.

 

After 54 minutes and it was 3-0 through PEARCE and on 58 minutes when it became 4-0 through NEWTON the Normanton tweeter got really excited and reported it was 4-0 against Clifton..well the excitement didn't stop there, as after 74 minutes, a floodlight flickered and then  we were in total darkness as all the floodlights went out..The crowd of 34 were flicking the lights of their mobile phones on to search for their way out, some went to the bar, whilst others stayed in the ground and had a chat. After about 15 minutes, the lights came back on and they looked brighter than they were before they had gone off.

 

The ref bought the players back to the pitch and the game commenced and though Calverton didn't give up playing, it was all South Normanton now and after 85 minutes NEWTON got his second of the game and the visitors fifth to finish the scoring.

NOTTS SENIOR LEAGUE GROUNDHOP UPDATE

THE 2nd PRECISION NOTTS SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE GROUNDHOP TICKETS ARE ON SALE

THE Precision Notts Senior Football League will stage their Annual Second Groundhop  with FIVE matches - one on a Friday Evening and four on a Saturday after last seasons bumper occasion.

Non-League football fans from all over the World, as far as Australia, Germany, Sweden,Holland and the UK have already booked to flock to the Nottinghamshire event, which frequently provides record attendances for the five matches chosen to host the Groundhop around the County.

This season the chosen matches are:

Friday 11th April 2014: 

Cotgrave FC v Burton Joyce FC (7.45pm)

Intending spectators can obtain a five-match advanced package ticket for only £15, which includes admission and 5 home club programmes for all FIVE matches. Extra Programme packs can also be obtained for £5 per pack of 5..plus badge sets, as all home clubs will be having a badge done for the 1st time costing £15 per set of all 5.

There is also a coach running from Nottingham Railway Station to the four Saturday matches for only £15. The coach is filling up rather quickly and comes on a first book and pay service, with the Advanced Match Ticket, so please dont leave it till the last minute to book.

FC STAR IN CUP WIN OVER ALMA

Well was going to Castlecroft Rangers FC for their Staffs Cup Quarter Final tie, but this was postponed on Friday and is now being played on Saturday 1st February, so it was to the drawing board and fellow Hopper and local to Stafford man Chris Bedford tweeted me to tell me about FC Stafford being def on with a 3G pitch.

A lot of folks aren't keen on the 3G idea but I've never seen a poor match on one as yet, though this is only the 4th one I've seen on 3G!

Traffic was a bit heavy through Derby and then we got a bit of slow traffic through Stafford but arrived at the ground at 1.30pm and was kindly greeted by the 2 ladies in the Refreshments Room, I had a lovely cuppa coffee and yes it was the best, only NESCAFE and only 50p.

The match you have to watch from the top, as you are not allowed down pitchside, so a few of the photos have come out a bit blurry with the netting around the pitch.

 

The game kicked off and it was the homesters who looked more hungry for the tie putting the visitors defence on the back foot with Man of the Match Tom Duffy ruling the midfield and creating chances. After 17 minutes, a through ball was met by TOM DUFFY who fired FC Stafford in front. After 19 Minutes, the score was double when JOSH ANDERSON slipped the ball past the oncoming keeper.

To Red Star's credit they dug in and battled but it was the home side having the better of the chances till the half time whistle.

 

The Second Half saw Red Star push forward, but this left gaps at the back and FC Stafford had chances to finish off the tie, but failed to convert. After 74 minutes, a bizarre goal for the visitors to bring the tie alive, when JON HAYWARD punted the ball up pitch from his own half, where it bounced just outside the penalty area and over the home keeper in to the net to make it 2-1 to the home side. This seemed to inspire the visitors on and after83 minutes SAM CAUSTON pulled them level. With the tie heading for extra time and my poor fingers freezing with just two minutes left of normal time, WILL HOLLOWOOD put FC STAFFORD in to the Quarter Finals of the Division Two Cup.
